“The Hundred-Foot Journey” was directed by Lasse Hallström and is based on Richard C. Morais’ book (screenplay by Steven Knight). In the movie, the Kadam family decides to leave India after a political coup results in the destruction of their restaurant and the death of the mother. First they end up in England under the flight path of Heathrow airport, but they then decide to move to continental Europe. Traveling in a rickety old van, fate stops them in a city where the second eldest son Hassan (Manish Dayal) meets a charming sous chef Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon) and the father (Om Puri) decides to set up his new restaurant Maison Mumbai one-hundred feet away from a Michelin-starred upscale French restaurant run by Madam Mallory, Marguerite’s boss.
The two restaurants begin a less than friendly rivalry, but eventually the cold war thaws with Hassan crossing over to the other side.
There will be a lot of food on screen so make sure you don’t watch on an empty stomach or make plans for a trip to an Indian restaurant afterward.
