This should come as no surprise. On Week 4 of Season 17 of “Dancing with the Stars,” the weakest dancer left the ballroom.
Yes, inspirational cancer survivor and TV favorite friend, Rhoda, aka Valerie Harper, will be leaving the ballroom. Valerie Harper had a bit of stage fright last week and forgot her routines. This week she did better but she was still at the bottom of the board with 18. I have not been impressed with Tristan MacManus and this season hasn’t changed my mind.
What you’ll want to see is Corbin Bleu’s paso doble. That and the return of Julianne Hough as a guest judge (replacing head judge Len Goodman) was the delight of te night. Oh, I should add, quite a few men took off their shirts. We miss you Maksim Chmerkovskiy, but for Week 4, we had Corbin Bleu and Brant Daugherty without their shirts.
Hough like Goodman doesn’t like gimmicks. She made this clear when she thanked Bleu (and his choreographer and partner Karina Smirnoff) for not using gimmicks. Bleu ended the night tied for first place with Amber Riley and Derek Hough and Elizabeth Berkley Lauren and Valentine Chmerkovskiy. All three teams received nines across the board for scores of 27.
The judges noted that Bleu didn’t have proper hip placement for the Spanish C frame that the paso doble calls for–something they didn’t mention when Bill Engvall and Emma Slater performed the “Lone Ranger” paso doble to the “William Tell Overture.”
Of course, the danger of taking off your shirt is that you can’t hide your shoulder position. That hurt both Bleu and Daugherty.
Of the top three couples, I though Corbin Bleu and Karina Smirnoff did the best. I’m not a fan of the Argentine tango routines on “Dancing with the Stars” because their concept of the dance is not actually true to the dance on competition. Most of the professional dancers aren’t well versed in Argentine tango; they are more knowledgeable on International style tango and sometimes American. I didn’t like Lauren and Chmerkovskiy’s Argentine tango because of the hold and her footwork.
Amber Riley and Derek Hough did a good job in the tango. Her footwork was clean, but the routine itself could have had more difficulty.
I am impressed by reality star Nicole Polizzi. She’s become quite a performer but her cheerleader background revealed explains some of it.
If you check out the official “Dancing with the Stars” YouTube channel you can tell that something is oh-so-wrong. Not all of the dances are posted again and again, some of the dances are posted twice. Sorry Valerie Harper and Tristan MacManus and Brant Daugherty and Peta Murgatroyd. ABC DWTS YouTube channel is playing favorites again. For Valerie Harper that may be a moot point, but is that fair for Brant Daugherty who is still trying to get votes?
You can, however, watch the full episode on the ABC website on-demand.
As a reminder, this is how it works. Your votes from last week are added to the judges score from this week and a couple is eliminated at the end of the night.
Phone voting begins during the show on Mondays, and is open until 60 minutes after the conclusion of that show in your local time zone.
Online voting at both ABC.com and Facebook opens each Monday when the show begins on the East Coast at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT) and stays open until 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT) the next day. During the season’s final week on Monday, November 25, online voting will open when the show begins on the East Coast at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT) and will stay open until 11 a.m. ET (8 a.m. PT) on Tuesday, November 26.
