Tuesday night was a shocker when instead of an elimination, Dorothy Hamill took the advice of her doctor and withdrew.
Hamill and her partner Tristan MacManus had received the lowest score Monday night with 15 for their jive routine. Hamill looked lost at times and her shoulders came forward. Her steps lacked bounce. According to the rehearsal footage, Hamill was suffering from a cyst that was causing pain, but on Tuesday she reported that she had a spinal injury.
Hamill and MacManus had been part of a three-way tie for second place during week 1. Their combined scores for their two dances left them in fifth place. At 56, Hamill was the oldest competitor and one of two Olympic gold medal athletes on this season’s cast. The other Olympian is gymnast Alexandra Raisman who is dancing with Mark Ballas.
Hamill was the 1976 Olympic champion in figure skating at the Winter Olympic Games held in Innsbruck, Austria. She would be the last Olympic figure skating champion to win without a triple jump in her arsenal of skills. Hamill also won the 1976 World Championships.
Hamill is the third contestant over 16 seasons to withdraw due to injury. Politician Tom DeLay withdrew during season 9 and Olympic gold medal beach volleyball player Misty May-Treanor withdrew during season 7.
Unlike season 9 when Tom DeLay withdrew during week three, no one was eliminated. DeLay withdrew but Debi Mazar was eliminated the same week. Misty May-Treanor withdrew during week 3 of season 7, but no one else was eliminated.
This week, the two teams at the bottom were boxer Victor Ortiz and Lindsay Arnold and Lisa Vanderpump and Gleb Savchenko. Both had turned in an 18 (straight sixes) on Tuesday. Wynonna Judd and Tony Dovolani also received an 18, but were safe. D.L. Hughley and Cheryl Burke received a 16 on Tuesday.
With combined scores, Hamill and MacManus, Lisa Vanderpump and Gleb Savchenko, Victor Ortiz and Lindsay Arnold, Wynonna Judd and Dovolani were tied for eighth place with 36/60. D.L. Hughley and Cheryl Burke were at the bottom with 28/60. Hughley and Burke must have a stronger fan base than boxer Victor Ortiz or reality star and restaurant entrepreneur Vanderpump. They are likely the two celebrities that will find themselves in trouble next week.
