‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,’ Season 2, Episode 8: ‘Separate Ways’ Recap

Titan X makes landfall in Australia, where Shaw lures Godzilla into a showdown. Isabel uses the battle as a distraction for her secret operation.

We start by following a faded red truck driven by Old Lee  through brush and then eventually into a vast sandy wasteland which we are informed by a title is Northeastern Australia. There’s no one and nothing in sight until the truck goes over a dune and come upon Krakilla or Titan X, far from the water, taking a dust bath, but not enjoying it. Hundreds of Trilobillas (Scarabs) are crawling off of Krakilla and scurrying across the sand to a weird structure in the sand that continues below the surface.

There are no surfers in sight. Old Lee gets out to observe.

From there, we go to the control room of Outpost 18 and follow a Black man, Reddick Barris (Curtiss Cook), to his office where he takes an incoming call on his computer from the Secretary of Defense and he reports, “The situation is evolving rapidly.” The Australians are demanding that the US “make good” on the mutual defense pact. The secretary is thinking nuclear. The reference to Castle Bravo is an important one for Godzilla.

Castle Brave was the first US test of the hydrogen bomb and was detonated on 1 March 1954 at Bikini Atoll, in the Marshall Islands. It was the largest nuclear device ever detonated by the US and was estimated to be 1,000 times more powerful than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

The blast created massive amounts of radioactive coral debris and the plume hit inhabited atolls (Rongelap and Utirik) as well as a Japanese fishing boat, Lucky Dragon No. 5, causing severe radiation sickness. The fallout caused long-term health issues for residents, including cancer and birth defects. It was the Lucky Dragon No. 5 that inspired the original Godzilla film.

Barris reports that the nearest population center from the Titan X landing is about 10 miles inland and is being evacuated.

The secretary tells Barris, “We don’t have any other options.” A helicopter lands on Outpost 18.

Director Barris  is obviously frustrated and his problems mount when Tim leadings Keiko and Cate to his office. Before that Cate asks Tim, “Do you think he’ll believe us?”

Tim says, “That you have an emotional connection to a monster? We won’t lead with it.”

Barris  has people looking all over for them. How lucky that they just show up. “I should have both of you escorted to Asset Management.”

Tim protests because he thinks Barris should listen to what they have to say.

Keiko begins, “We just need a minute of your time…”

When Barris tells them he has a Titan in Australia, Cate replies, “That’s not your biggest problem.”

“Then what is?” he asks.

“Lee Shaw,” Keiko responds.

Tim further explains that Shaw has a plan to deal with the Titan by himself. Keiko explains that according to  Dr. Suzuki, he’s using gamma rays to attract another Titan to Titan X. That Titan, Cate reveals, is Godzilla.

Back to the sand duns of Northeastern Australia, we have Old Lee in a truck with license plate SSL-21D, heading toward the water. We get another angle of the Krakilla. Birds are flying overhead. Now he parks his truck between the waves and Krakilla. He’s using a bandana as a face mask. It’s pretty dusty with Krakilla writhing in the sand. Old Lee opens the truck and…we are back on Outpost 18 with Barris. Barris goes down to the command room, but there’s no other Titan activity detected.

Barris then turns to Tim: “Can he actually do it? Can Shaw call Godzilla?”

Tim says, “Dr. Serizawa said Godzilla was King of the monsters. He’s not going to do anything he doesn’t want to do.”

Keiko, however, reminds them that Godzilla first showed up because of the Castle Bravo H-bomb. She believes that Old Lee’s device and emulate the same energy signature. Back to Old Shaw on the beach. He’s getting things ready.

Back at the command center on Outpost 18, the only thing that is unusual are energy spikes, not unlike the ones seen in Godzilla when he’s preparing for an attack.

Barris reveals that a fleet of twenty ships armed with nuclear cruise missiles is on the way. They have less than three hours.

Keiko says that for centuries Krakilla has been going on the same migratory course with out patterns of attack. What they need to do is figure out why it is off its course and get it back on course. That’s better than a nuclear weapon or another Titan.

Barris asks, “Let me understand what you’re saying: You want to save the Titan?”

Cate responds, “It needs our help. I think I can get if off the beach and back on its migratory route.”

There’s another helicopter landing on Outpost 18.  May in coming down the stairs in one of the corridors when she catches Kentaro and informs him that Cate and Keiko are there as well.

May asks, “Want to talk about Thailand?”

Obviously, Kentaro does not, saying, “What about it?” For May, it seems so random that he want to Thailand and “you hung out with no one?”

“Her name’s Isabel…Isabel Simmons.”

In case you forgot, May’s there to remind you that Isabel Simmons is the daughter of Walter Simmons, the founder of Apex Cybernetics. May’s upset but Kentaro claims, “She’s not that bad” because “she hates Apex just as much as we do. Just leave it okay. It was just a visit, nothing more.”

Back at the director’s office, Barris says, “It needs out help? How did you know? Did you talk to it? I can’t explain it, but it’s a sense.”

Keiko defends her, “Cate knew it was lost even before we knew it was off its migratory route. Even before Monarch knew it was missing and that is not data that I am willing to dismiss.”

Barris says, “We have a known threat. We know its location.” How crazy does it sound that they should hold fire on a “feeling” that it needs help.

Tim reminds Barris that “Monarch has always tried to find improbable solutions to impossible problems.”

Cate reminds Barris that all he’s risking is two Randas that he wanted to haul off to Asset Management anyway.

On their way to the helicopter, Cate and Keiko meet up with May and Kentaro. Cate doesn’t want to talk with them. And Kentaro has his own ideas. He goes to a room where he can take a call from Isabel.

Back on the beach, Old Lee is putting Suzuki’s contraption together. He turns it on and takes off in the truck.

Back at Outpost 18, Cate asks Kentaro to talk. Kentaro assure Cate that he’s fine. “I just sometimes have dreams about Dad.”

Kentaro feels this is also his mission to prevent Titan X from killing more people. Keiko, Kentaro and Cate get in the helicopter. Tim is left in the command center with May. May needs to speak to Brenda Holland (Dominique Tipper).

May tells Tim about Kentaro’s visit with Isabel. Tim confides that Hiroshi used to say, “We’re in the monster business so many mistake it going to be huge.”

Back to the helicopter heading to Australia and then Old Lee on the beach watching the angry Titan X who seems to be under seige by birds. The birds cause the helicopter to crash behind the dunes.

You’d think with the advanced technology, they could have predicted the problems with the birds.

Somewhere in the South Pacific

Down in the deep fissure, something is sleeping, but suddenly opens one any red eye.

Back to the beach. It’s weirdly quiet and Old Lee finds Keiko walking toward him. Everyone is okay. “Why?” Old Lee asks. We see Cate and Hiroshi followed by two crew members walking toward them.

Monarch Asset Management, Undisclosed Location

May gets to meet Brenda. “You move fast. It took you two days to move through the ranks.”

May wants to know why Brenda is telling lies. Brenda claims she went against Apex protocols. “You were right, Corah. I went too far.”

“What does Walter Simmons’ daughter want with Kentaro” May asks.

Back on the Australian beach, Keiko confront Old Lee. “There has to be more than one way to deal with a Titan, Lee.”

“I’m sure there is, but right now, I’ll take Godzilla,” Old Lee responds. But Old Lee doesn’t know about the naval fleet with nuclear warheads. Old Lee tells the helicopter pilots to inform Monarch and the US naval fleet that whatever they have won’t work on one Titan and certainly not two.

Keiko explains that she and Cate want to get Titan X back on its migratory route. Old Lee asks for hard facts, but Keiko doesn’t have them. She just believes that more people will die if the Krakilla doesn’t get back on course. Old Lee wants to know if a Titan’s life is worth putting her life, Cate and Kentaro’s in danger.

“Are your convictions worth the risk you’re taking?” Keiko asks Old Lee. From Old Lee’s perspective, he’s the only one in the line of fire. Keiko reminds him that they are all there, but that’s really Keiko’s doing, right?

“You’re not supposed to be here, Kei,” Old Lee says.

“Where am I supposed to be?” she asks.

“Anywhere but here,” he replies.

Elsewhere in the Pacific, there swims Godzilla, but back on the beach, Cate is getting uncomfortably close to Krakilla. When the tentacles open, a nest is revealed. Cate is happy. “That’s why it’s here. The Titan built a nest.”

Kentaro is horrified and calls Isabel. “I don’t know if my father would have wanted this.”

But Isabel reminds him, “Your father died because of Cate.”

“She not a bad person,” Kentaro responds, but Isabel tells him it doesn’t matter. Cate will cause more deaths.

“If this plan is going to work,” Isabel declares, “I need to know now.”

“It’ll work. The plan will work,” Kentaro assures Isabel.

Suddenly, Old Lee and Keiko notice that the kids aren’t there. They take off in the truck toward Krakilla.

At Krakilla, Cate declares, “This Titan is a mother. That’s why she can’t leave right now.”  From the beach, Cate hears something. She sees Godzilla approaching.

Outpost 18 realizes that a Titan is coming, but that’s not all.

That sneaky Jason Trissop (Cliff Curtis) is back as well. And he’s come prepared, with men and nets to take the egg.

So while Godzilla is fighting Krakilla, Trissop’s men are stealing the egg.
