The San Francisco edition of the Edwardian Ball emphasizes ballroom dancing more and for the last nine years Vima Dance Studio in San Francisco has been facilitating the partner dancing. If you get tickets to the Edwardian Ball at the Regency Ballroom on Saturday, 18 January 2014, then you’ll be able to see partner dancing made a bit (Edward) Gorey.
The tradition has Vima and its newly trained Edwardian dancers taking the floor for the first hour and a half. So people won’t be standing around watching the band on the dance floor. They will either be dancing or off to the side watching. During the partner dance segment, the Vima Vice Squad show what made them the U.S formation team champions in 2012 and 2013. In addition, there will be an all male performance group and Team “Photon” (Photis and Ron J) performing ballroom with a steampunk flair.
Vima Dance Studio has ballroom dance classes for the aspiring Edwardian November through January. Yes, it is too late to sign up unless you know a few steps already or are willing to fake it.
In Los Angeles, Ian and I generally tango to everything. We suggest you go and watch the couples glide across the ballroom, talk to a friendly couple after they come off the dance floor and decide what you want to do next year: introductory ballroom classes, salon, variety and Edwardian minuet classes or an Edwardian introductory package.
Vima Dance Studio produces an annual ball of their own. For the ninth year, you can join an evening of dance and performance with refreshments and light fare on 22 February 2014 from 7 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. Early bird tickets are $20 until 10 February 2014.
This weekend, though, head out to the Edwardian Ball for some decadent steampunkness at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco.
