Canadian-born Tommy Chong is 76 while fashion designer Betsey Johnson is 72. Both are unlikely to win the 19th season of “Dancing with the Stars,” but surely they will add humor and whimsy.
Johnson teams with the popular Tony Dovolani. Expect cartwheels because Johnson is known for finishing her fashion shows by performing them.
Johnson, who studied at the Pratt Institute and graduated from Syracuse University, was once part of the youthquake fashion movement and Andy Warhol’s underground scene. Edie Sedgwick was her house model for her Betsey Bunky Nini boutique on New York’s Upper East Side, opened in 1969. Her fashion label was Alley Cat in the 1970s.
The Santa Barbara-born Sedgwick died at age 28 of a barbiturate overdose in 1971.
Betsey Johnson LLC filed for bankruptcy in 2012, the same year she celebrated 40 years of fashion in a retrospective. She and her daughter, Lulu Johnson became reality stars with a TV show on the Style Network.
Tony Dovolani spent time coaching actress/singer Jennifer Lopez for the American version of “Shall We Dance?” He also played the Latin bad boy in the movie.
Dovolani joined “Dancing with the Stars” during season 2, finishing third with Stacy Kiebler. During season 10, he was infamously teamed with Kate Gosselin. Dovolani had a better time teamed with Melissa Rycroft during season 8 when they finished third and then again during season 15 (All-Stars) when they finished first. Last season, he was partnered with NeNe Leakes for a seventh place finish.
Season 19 begins with a two-hour two-day season premiere tonight, Monday, Sept. 15 (8 p.m. to 10 p.m. ET) . Tuesday, “Dancing with the Stars: The Results” will reveal which couple will be eliminated and include a performance by Smokey Robinson.
Robinson will perform a duet of “My Girl” with Aloe Blacc from his album “Smokey and Friends.” A special dance number will be performed by the new pros: Allison Holker, Keo Motsepe and Artem Chigvintsev.
ABC.com will be offering five live streams from key positions at the show venue, allowing fans to choose views of the Red Room, judges, sky box, a wide angle of the dance floor and a hosted feed that will highlight relevant social media conversations. Throughout the season, fans will also have opportunities to participate in the outcome of the show, using social media to weigh in on everything from songs, dance styles, and even partners.
Two-time Mirrorball champion and actress Julianne Hough returns to DWTS as a judge, alongside head judge Len Goodman, the every emotive Bruno Tonioli and the lift-monitor Carrie Ann Inaba at the judges’ desk. Hosted by Emmy® Award-winning host Tom Bergeron (“America’s Funniest Home Videos”) and Erin Andrews (sports host & “Dancing with the Stars” Season 10 finalist).
For the first two weeks viewers may cast their votes for their favorite couples via phone on Monday nights during and up to 60 minutes after the end of the “Dancing with the Stars” broadcast in each time zone.
