I don’t gamble except on life and pearls but it’s no gamble to take someone out to The Gamble House so show them one very beautiful and unique aspect of Southern California culture. This month, for three weeks only, The Gamble House is hosting a new tour as a matter of opportunity.

Anyone who has wood floors knows that eventually you’ll need to sand and resurface and the beautiful floors of Pasadena’s Gamble House is no different. This summer while some of the rooms are being resurfaced and the USC grad students are away, the Gamble House has opened for a short and inexpensive $20 tour: Upstairs Downstairs Tour.

For three weeks only and already into its second week, the tour allows only ten people at a time to visit this Greene & Greene gem and for the first time since it became a public institute, a view the servants quarters. The servants quarters are two rooms and a shared bathroom that are usually used by two select architecture grad students from USC. The students get to stay for one academic year but August is when the students changeover.

roomSo while the rooms are vacant, you can walk in and learn room-envy. The rooms have more closet space than some apartments closets I’ve crammed my things in. You also get to understand how different the family-usage areas are from the servant usage areas. The servants are also given beauty and functionality but at a less dear price.

While you may not be able to see the other rooms that are closed down and emptied for the floor work, you do get to peak up in the attic and see a sampling of the chairs. Each chair set was created for a specific room and some for specific individuals. Seeing them side-by-side allows you to more fully appreciate The Gamble House.IMG_1505 copy
