AIF Review: ‘Lesbian Space Princess’ Learns How to Love ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Despite its animation style, “Lesbian Space Princess” is not for kids unless you want to explain bare animated breasts  and a walking clitoris to your kids. The titular character, Princess Saira (voiced by Shabana Azeez), is in love with bounty hunter Kiki (Bernie Van Tiel), but opposites may attract, but that doesn’t always lead to long-term relationships. Under director Emma Hough Hobbs and Leela Varghese, Saira will get a chance to prove her love.

Princess Saira had two mums, but that’s not unusual on the planet of Clitopolis. She is, however,  a boring princess.Like most normal people, Kiki considers a scrapbook after two weeks of horizontal mambo where Saira has proven to be good with her hands, to be smothering. Kiki doesn’t mind the sex and is not, we later learn, necessarily drawn to monogamy, but Kiki needs more than nights of gay flicks, chills and sobbing apologies.

Saira and Willow.

At 23, Saira, now dumped, seems more like a needy pre-teen or young teen. She’s been consigned to the single zone at the Lesbian Ball.  She’s not as cool as her almost identical looking mothers (Jordan Raskopoulos as Queen Leanne and Madeleine Sami as Queen Ann) and she’s a five-time failure. She’s been unable to summon her labrys. What is that, you might ask. It’s the most powerful weapon known to lesbian kind.

Lesbian symbol:

In the 1970s, the labrys was adopted by the lesbian community, as a lesbian feminist symbol, representing strength and self-sufficiency. The labrys lesbian flag, created in 1999, involves a labrys superimposed on an inverted black triangle and set against a violet background.

In Kyrgyzstan, “Labrys” is an LBGT rights organization. The group’s goal is to improve the quality of life for all LBGT individuals in their country as well as Central Asia. Similarly, “Labrisz” is an associate in Hungary for lesbian and bissexual women.

Culture

The double axe is used by Cretan folklore preservation societies and associations both in Greece and abroad, on occasion with the spelling “lavrys” reflecting modern Greek pronunciation.”

You know what they say, sixth time is a charm…except it isn’t.

Kiki.

And then, Kiki, while enjoying bondage and more than one bedmate (yes, more naked cartoon boobs), is kidnapped by Straight White Maliens (Mark Samual Bonanno, Zachary Ruane and Broden Kelly). They dangle her over their toxic home brew. “We used to be the most powerful beings in the whole universe,” they whine. Now, they’ve been exiled to a man cave.

“This isn’t about you. You’re just the bait,” they tell Kiki.  They are making a chick magnet and after ordering new Swedish magnets online, they find it came without batteries. They’re mad. Wouldn’t you be? They need a battery which is Princess Saira. While Princess Saira literally goes nowhere, there is one thing that can lure her out of gay space: Kiki.

But the Straight White Maliens don’t actually need Princess Saira, but her labrys. To save Kiki,  Saira steals a Problematic Ship (Richard Roxburgh)  and heads toward Malien land.  Along the way, she picks up a few companions: an annoyingly positive former gay pop idol named Willow (Gemma Chua-Tran) and a drag queen named Blade (Kween Kong).

There are, as you can tell from the name of the planet, plenty of worldly wordplay that are definitely not kid-friendly. The kid-friendly-ish style of animation insures that there’s nothing pornographic about the bare breasts or wandering clitoris.

“Lesbian Space Princess” is about finding confidence and learning to love oneself and find someone who is appropriate to love. What or who may seem cool, may not really be that at all. And being afraid of being alone isn’t a good reason to be in any relationship. Not everyone will end up in a relationship, but that’s okay, too. Hopefully you don’t need those lessons, but then again, it never hurts to have a reminder to avoid the gloom goo even if it’s pink.

So be a space princess and launch yourself into adventure (and before you love someone else, learn to love yourself) and free yourself from all bad vibes.

“Lesbian Space Princess” had its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February. It was screened at the Animation Is Film Festival (17 October 2025) and at the Hawai’i International Film Festival (20 October 2025). Rated MA-15 in Australia and 18+ in Canada.
