Ms. Geek Speaks: Antifa and ‘All My Heroes Kill Cops’

Noah Berger, Special To The Chronicle (25 October 2011)
An Occupy Oakland protester who gave her name as Loba joins several hundred demonstrators gathered outside the Oakland, Calif., main library on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011. About 500 people joined the rally as of 5 p.m. to decry an early morning police raid on two encampments.

This photo was posted by actor and Republican James Woods. James Woods has 802K followers. This is a woman with her face covered. She must be #Antifa, right?

That’s what James Woods assumes. You might think because of the date of Woods’ tweet that this photo had something to do with the protests in Charlottesville, Virginia or the subsequent ones the next weekend in places like Boston.

On Twitter, James Woods (@RealJamesWoods) claims this is #Antifa and the #AltLeft. He also claims this person is a Democrat (#DemocratViolence).

The photo comes the San Francisco Gate when in October of 2011, there was a protest called Occupy Oakland.

The article by Matthai Kuruvila, Justin Berton and Demian Bulwa (Published 11:20 pm, Tuesday, October 25, 2011), “Police tear gas Occupy Oakland protesters: Protests Oakland demonstrators sought to retake cleared encampment,” does not mention Antifa. It does not mention Democrats. It does not mention Alt-Left.

The event was in front of Oakland City Hall at Frank H. Ogawa Plaza and Occupy Oakland began as a protest about the fatal shooting of Oscar Grant by the Bay Area Rapid Transit Police in 2009.  Over 400 people were arrested under then-Mayor of Oakland, Jean Quan (in office from 2011 to 2015), a Democrat. She was succeeded by another Democrat as mayor, Libby Schaaf.

In 2013, the Oakland City Council paid settlement money to 13 Occupy Oakland protesters who were injured by police ($1.17 million).

The current Occupy Oakland Twitter account notes that it is “news of resistance in Oakland and across the Earth” and has “no love for capitalism.”

On 10 Nov. 2016, Occupy Oakland did tweet, “ it’s time to mobilize more than ever ⚡️ “Day 1 In Trump’s America” by ” @Incilin is the senior editor at @Genius, Insanul Ahmed.

We don’t really know if the woman is a member of Antifa or the Democratic Party or if she is involved in more protests. We only know she supported the Occupy Oakland protests which were about police brutality. We know that the Democratic mayor did ask for the police to crack down on the protesters and the methods used by the police were not always correct under civil law, hence the payout.

While James Woods opines that he is blacklisted because of his conservative views, but he doesn’t always have his facts straight.

This James Woods (@RealJamesWoods) post on #Antifa and #DemocratViolence is #FakeWoods.

EDIT(26 January 2022):

For those here because you think that this woman is at a Black Lives Matter protest, this photo is from 2011. Oscar Grant, who was Black, was killed in 2009. James Woods claimed she was Antifa. There is nothing to substantiate that.

Black Lives Matter was founded in 2013. So this woman was not at a Black Lives Matter protest.

  1. While interesting, this overwrought attempt to deflect from the truth James Woods stated is what Jesus referred to when he told the Pharisees, “You strain at gnats, while swallowing camels.” Today, the radicalized Democrat Party is virtually indistinguishable from Antifa, Occupy Whatever, and BLM. Let’s not play games.

    • Not being Christian, I looked up the quote you reference. The full English Standard version paragraph is ““Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!” This is about justice, mercy and faithfulness to God. I am not aware of James Woods being particularly religious.

Since you use the word “overwrought,” to describe my essay, I’m not sure what kind of reading you are used to. Overwrought means “elaborated to excess” or “extremely excited” according to Merriam-Webster. I was not extremely excited.

Misleading people by using an Oakland photo in a way that implies it is about a protest in Virginia has nothing to do with any truth. Using a photo from 2011 to imply that the person was protesting in 2017 has nothing to do with “truth.”

While there may be radicalized members of the Democratic Party the photo in question is not related to the Democratic Party from what little we know about Loba. We have no idea if Loba supports Antifa or Black Lives Matter. We do know you have problems distinguishing Antifa, Occupy Whatever, Black Lives Matter and the Democratic Party. You may think that differentiating between those things and the years and locations of a photo are playing games, but it is actually just looking closely at the facts instead of make illogical judgments based on personal prejudices. Justice depends upon knowing the facts and neither justice nor mercy can be served when one’s vision is clouded by prejudices.
