SYTYCD choreographers offer tango classes this week in Downey

The lessons with Miriam Larici and Leonardo Barrionuevo continue this week with two days and four different topics to choose from. All classes are held in Downey at the Elks Club.

Larici and Barrionuevo have performed in different casts of “Forever Tango” and together competed on “Superstars of Dance” winning the couples category. They have most recently been seen on Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” as choreographers.

On Monday, the beginning classes from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. will be focused on giros (turns). In Argentine tango, this usually involves a contra-body position. You’re playing twister with your upper body facing one way and your lower body another. And yet you’re standing up straight with elegant posture and gliding across the dance floor. The problem usually is posture and keeping a compact, balanced frame.

Also on Monday, from 9:05 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. the more advanced students will be learning milonga steps with traspie. By milonga, we mean not the tango dance party, but the upbeat, faster paced dance style. Traspie literally means to stumble or trip. Milonga con traspie is a double-step to one beat in a milonga dance. Sometimes it is translated as syncopated steps. Many dancers never learn a true milonga step, so this is your opportunity to learn it from a couple of masters of Argentine tango.

Tuesday, the men and women will be separated for stretching and coordination work that will help with muscle memory and flexibility (8 p.m. to 9 p.m.) Later, from 9:05 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., the topic will be social ganchos. Ganchos are those quick kicks and wraps between your partner’s legs, but Larici and Barrionuevo will be teaching the social dance variations and not the dramatic and space-hogging exhibition stylings.

Price per class is $18. You don’t need a partner. Like many dance classes, women usually outnumber the men, but partners are rotated.
