GO: See Diavolo’s ‘Escape’. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you love theater, the circus, acrobatics or dance and live in Los Angeles, you must see Diavolo’s “Escape.” “Only  90 audience members get to see 22 artists perform on large, mobile architectural structures under the choreography of Jacques Heim, the man who choreographed the Cirque du Soleil’s Las Vegas production “Ká.” This an exclusive, private event with proceeds benefitting Diavolos’ educational and military veterans programming, so your ticket is tax deductible.

Unlike Cirque du Soleil productions, you get so close you’ll see the sweat of these performers, and if you’re brave enough, you can even step in or on some of these heavy playthings. Think mobile architecture.  Because there’s an interactive element which means you should be prepared.

Dress like you’re an action hero but more Lara Croft the Tomb Raider covered and comfy than Wonder Woman bustier, short skirt and heels. The heels won’t make stepping in or on the structures easy or safe.  With the movement, you need to be sure you aren’t flashing fellow audience members, particularly since recording is allowed. Dress in layers because while it was hot inside (personal fans are provided), when we left it was cold.

Go early for parking and the possibility of getting on one of the structures. The doors open 30 minutes early. If you get there too early, you can enjoy a quick (preferably light) bite at Barbara’s at the Brewery (620 Moulton Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90031). We tried a light salad. Then, we walked back to line up and get seated. Soon enough you’ll be invited on to what looks like an oversized hamster ball. Step up for your turn.

Once seated be sure to keep your things, including your legs behind the white taped line. The performers may come that close and sometimes even closer.  Then be prepared to be amazed with the teamwork and acrobatics, with the engineering behind the structures and with the choreography.

“Escape” is about people struggling to break free from the chaos that is life. They find connections, they come together and separate, they leap in hopes of being caught, they collaborate and they find out the possibilities that others can offer and that they themselves can offer.  A world free of chaos might not be possible, but finding people to help you through makes life more interesting.  Heim said, “Life is about finding solutions,” and “Escape” is in itself a solution for those needing inspiration and a chance to give to a good cause.

VIP ticket holders receive a complimentary drink along with free, priority access to the  interactive elements.

For safety, there is absolutely NO LATE SEATING. If you arrive late, you will be asked to wait until intermission to enter the theater. There are no refunds.

“Escape” runs Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through June 2026 at L’Espace Diavolo, 616 Moulton Avenue. Act I is 30 minutes. Then there’s a 20-minute intermission. Act II is 35 minutes.  For tickets and more information, visit Diavolo.org.
