Ms. Geek Speaks: Feeling Blue?

I know a lot of people are feeling blue, but what were our expectations? I live in a city that has its first female minority mayor.

Los Angeles as a city had its first Black/African mayor in 1973; Tom Bradley was mayor from 1973-1993. It’s had a Latino mayor (Antonio Villaraigosa, 2005-2013). It now has its first female minority mayor, Karen Bass (2022 to present).

During the time Bradley was mayor, the Black/African American population was 17.9 percent but by 1990, it has decreased to 14%. The Latino population was 17% in 1970, but in 2020 is 46.9%. The Asian American population was 3.6% in 1970, but in 2020 is 11.7%. The African American population is now 8.6%. In 2023, Latino/Hispanic is 48.1% and Asian alone is 11.8% with 0.1% Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander alone.

The demographics suggest that a Latino mayor would provide better representation but LA has never had a Latino mayor.

California is only 34.3% White alone and not Hispanic/Latino. Whereas, Hispanic/Latino are 40.4% and Asian alone are 16.5% Black/African American  are 6.5%. Women are 50.1% of the population.

California, like Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nevada, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, have never elected a female governor. Of the female governors, 30 have been Democrats and 19 Republican. Only four states, Alabama, Arizona, Connecticut and New Mexico have elected women to be governor from both major parties. Despite its history and its Latino population, California has only had one Latino governor (since the US conquest of California):  Romualdo Pacheco (1831-1899) who served from 1875-1875 but succeeded from lieutenant governor after then-governor Newton Booth was elected to the US Senate.

If California cannot elected a governor that is Latino or female, then why would one think that California as a state would be able to come together and support a Black woman in a presidential race?
