You’ve probably heard their music, even if you don’t know them by name. Bajofondo is not as famous at Gotan Project, but they are highly popular among tango dancers in Pasadena and around Los Angeles although the group is no longer called Bajofondo Tango Club. Bajofondo will be at Royce Hall in UCLA on Friday, Oct. 12 at 8 p.m., but go early for pre-show activities.
Bajofondo is a band of eight musicians from Argentina and Uruguay who began with electrotango (acoustic tango and electronic music) and have branched out into DNB (drum and bass), house music and trip hop (a fusion of hip hop and downtempo electronica that originated in the U.K.).
The group is led by two-time Academy Award and Golden-Globe winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla. Santaolalla won Oscars for his original score for “Brokeback Mountain” in 2005 and “Babel” in 2006. You can also hear his music in the 2007 “Into the Wild,” the 2010 “Biutiful” and the upcoming film adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road.”
Other band members include Latin Grammy Award-winning composer Juan Campodónico, Luciano Supervielle on piano, Martín Ferrés on bandoneón, Verónica Loza on vocals, Gabriel Casacuberta on bass and Adrian Sosa on drums.
There will be a beginning tango lesson prior to the show led by Sharna Fabiano and Isaac Oboka on the Royce Hall Terrace at 6:30 p.m. Open dancing begins at 7 p.m. The dancing is free to ticket holders and UCLA community members. Happy hour food and drink can be purchased.
The show begins at 8 p.m. at UCLA Royce Hall, 340 Royce Drive, Los Angeles. Tickets are $20-$50. For tickets for more info go to the UCLA website.
