“Musica en Espera” is a quirky charming little romance from Argentina. You know immediately where it’s going and in such rom-com, all depends upon how much you like the characters and the little surprises along the way.
Our leading man could easily play Cyrano de Bergerac, such are the dimensions of his nose. Surely if this film gets a Hollywood remake someone more conventionally handsome will play the this role. Ezequiel (Diego Peretti) is a film music composer suffering from a creative block. His mortgage payments are three months overdue and he must beg for more time. While on hold to the assistant manager, Paula (Natalia Oreiro), he hears the perfect music for a scene but he needs to hear it again. Paula is single and pregnant, having been deserted by her boyfriend Santiago. She hasn’t told her parents that Santiago is out of the picture and her mother (Pilar Gamboa) flies in from Spain. Circumstances bring the two together with Ezequiel pretending to be the absent Santiago. While Ezequiel tracks down the elusive melody, Paula’s mother follows her suspicions about Santiago.
Directed by Hernan A. Goldfird, this delightful 2009 rom-com is a good date movie and vilify either Santiago (who never appears) nor Ezequiel’s ex-wife Mariana (Maria Ucedo) as a cheap means to manipulate the audience’s emotions. Julieta Steinberg and Patricio Vega’s script has a few surprises, some that are too convenient, but nothing that isn’t easy to swallow.
This movie was part of the Laemmle’s Latin American Showcase.
